#1 Introduction
The journey to becoming a certified member of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) is both rewarding and challenging. For anyone looking to elevate their career in engineering technology, OACETT certification provides professional recognition and an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the field. In my own experience, pursuing certification wasn’t just about meeting a requirement—it was a way to expand my knowledge, improve my skill set, and gain the ability to stamp drawings for grading and site servicing.
As someone who has worked in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry for over four years, I found that the certification process taught me invaluable lessons about business structures like sole proprietorships, corporations, and LLCs, as well as critical issues such as liability and ethics. These are skills and knowledge that extend beyond the technical, influencing decisions I make every day.
I’m Vijaykumar Patel, a BCIN Designer and project coordinator, and I’ve spent years specializing in residential projects. My expertise spans the design, planning, and execution phases, always ensuring compliance with the Ontario Building Code and Zoning By-Law regulations.

#2 Step 1: Check Eligibility
At OACETT, determining your eligibility is the first crucial step toward certification. OACETT has made the process as straightforward as possible, with all the information you need available on their website. However, your specific pathway may depend on your background and education.
In my case, I am an internationally educated professional, and I found that reviewing the eligibility requirements on the website helped me understand the basics. However, I wasn’t entirely sure if I should pursue the Certified Technician (C.Tech) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) route, given my mixed experience in both civil engineering and architectural design.
To resolve this, I reached out to the OACETT team for clarification. I sent them my resume, detailing my education and work experience. Their team was incredibly helpful in reviewing my background, and they recommended that I pursue the C.E.T. designation in civil engineering, which aligns with my educational background.

Once I understood that I was eligible for C.E.T. in civil engineering, I felt more confident in starting the application process. My journey started by becoming an associate member, followed by C.Tech, and eventually working my way to C.E.T. in civil.

#3 Step 2: Account Signup on the OACETT Website
Creating your OACETT online account is a simple but crucial step to begin your journey toward certification. Here’s a quick guide to help you through the process.
How to Create Your OACETT Account
Visit the OACETT Website: Go to www.oacett.org and click on the “Join” button at the top-right corner.
Fill in the Required Fields:
Email Address: A valid email address that will be used for all OACETT communications.
Password: Choose a secure password (follow the password criteria provided).
Confirm Password: Re-enter your password.
Depending on the signup form, you may also need to provide additional information, such as your contact number and mailing address.
Verify Your Email: After submitting your details, OACETT will send a verification email. Click the link in the email to verify your account.
Login to Your New Account: Once verified, you can log in using your email and password.
Complete Your Profile: Upon logging in, you'll be prompted to complete additional profile sections.
Following these steps ensures you are registered and ready to explore membership options, apply for certification, and track your progress.
#4 Step 3: Application to Become an Associate Member
This is where the journey officially begins with the payment of the application fee. Once you've gathered all the necessary documentation, the next step is submitting your application to become an Associate Member. This process is crucial as it marks your official entry into the certification journey.
Document List
1) Proof of Legal Name & Status
Copy of your Canadian passport OR PR card; OR work permit + identification portion of your country of origin passport.
2) Transcript - Ontario
Official transcripts from the program/s you completed in Ontario. They are sent to us directly via email (or file sharing platform eg MyCreds) to certify@oacett.org or mail to the address (10 Four Seasons Place, Suite 700, Toronto, ON M9B 6H7). You can upload unofficial transcripts or a copy of the diploma to start the application and get the official one sent later.
3) Official transcripts - International
Official transcripts from the program/s you completed outside of Canada. They can be sent to us directly via email (or file sharing platform eg MyCreds) to certify@oacett.org or by mail.
If they cannot be sent directly from the institution, copies of foreign transcripts can be notarized by a notary public in Ontario and mailed to the OACETT office. OACETT accepts WES documents; however, if they do not include the course-by-course information we will also need the notarized transcripts. You can upload unofficial transcripts or a copy of the diploma to start the application and get the official one sent later.
In my case, I have a 4-year bachelor's degree in civil engineering from India. Before coming to Canada, I obtained my transcripts from my college in India, which were stamped and certified by the institution, and OACETT accepted them. For my next transcript from St. Clair College, I simply emailed the college, and they sent the transcript directly to OACETT via email, completing the process.4) Resume
Job description/s (detailed roles and responsibilities) on company letterhead with your supervisor's name, title, signature, and date on every page. Please include your name, job title, and start date of employment at the top. Click here for more information.
5) Reference Document
Names and e-mail addresses of 2-3 work-related references (at least one should be a supervisor to verify the job description). Please refrain from listing blood relatives as reference contacts.
6) Experience
A detailed summary of your relevant work experience, including job titles, dates of employment, and a description of your roles and responsibilities. This information is crucial to demonstrate your qualifications for OACETT membership. Be sure to include any technical skills or projects that showcase your expertise in the field.
Application Fees
There is a one-time application fee of $254.25. After you officially become an Associate member, you will be charged annual membership dues of $344.65*I recommend visiting the OACETT website for accurate fee information.
Tip for Success
Organizing your documents beforehand can significantly speed up the process. Here are a few tips to ensure a smooth application:
Create a checklist: Cross-check all required documents before uploading.
Use clear, labeled file names: For example, "Transcript_OACETT.pdf" to avoid confusion.
Double-check for accuracy: Ensure all scanned documents are clear and legible.
By staying organized, you can avoid delays and ensure your application is processed as quickly as possible.
New Arrivals in Canada
OACETT offers excellent support for newcomers to Canada. If you apply within one year of your arrival, you may be eligible to have your application fee waived, making the process more accessible for recent immigrants.
After becoming an associate member, the real work begins—this is where your journey toward certification takes shape. The main tasks ahead include preparing for the Professional Practice Exam (PPE).
Exam Preparation
The PPE, or Professional Practice Exam, is a critical part of your certification process. This exam tests your knowledge of ethics, law, and professional responsibility within the engineering and technology fields. OACETT provides study material (e-book) to help you prepare, including comprehensive sample questions. It's important to dedicate time to review these resources thoroughly, ensuring you're well-prepared for the exam.
If you are an internationally educated professional and have not completed 1 year of Canadian work experience, you will need to prepare for the IEPPE instead. In my case, since I have a diploma from Ontario, I was eligible for the PPE exam.
To gain a deeper understanding of ethics and the legal system, I watched several YouTube videos. The exam also helps clarify business structures like sole proprietorship, LLC, and corporation, which is useful for future career decisions. I recommend approaching this exam not just as a milestone but as an opportunity to develop a solid understanding that will benefit you in various aspects of your professional life.

Student Discount
Once you meet all the requirements and pass the PPE/IEPPE exams, you become a C.Tech. (Certified Technician). To become a CET (Certified Engineering Technologist), you must first achieve C.Tech certification.#6 Step 5: Preparing and Submitting Your Technical Report Proposal (TRP)
While preparing for the PPE exam, I also began researching the next step: the report proposal. I reviewed all the guidelines, samples, and topics, giving myself ample time to select a subject for my report. I recommend choosing a topic within your domain but with a focus on learning something new. This is the perfect opportunity to dive deeper into a subject. I chose the topic "Revit's Role in Creating Sustainable Homes."
Although I was familiar with the typical uses of Revit, I had never explored how it can be leveraged to contribute to environmental sustainability. During my research, I found the topic fascinating and was inspired to prepare for both the LEED Green Associate and LEED AP (BD+C) certifications.

Once your proposal is complete, submit it to OACETT for review through their designated online portal or via email. Be sure to double-check submission requirements to avoid delays.
By carefully preparing your proposal and submitting it promptly, you’ll set yourself up for success in the next phase of your certification journey!
#7 Step 6: Uploading the Final Technical Report
Once your technical report proposal is approved, it's time to begin preparing and submitting the final version of your report. This step is crucial as it reflects your knowledge, analytical skills, and ability to address the proposed topic thoroughly.
It's always beneficial to delve deeply into your topic while waiting for your proposal approval from the committee - read extensively and get ready for the full report. If you meet all the requirements, the OACETT committee is likely to approve your proposal, giving you a head start on your full report. Even if they reject it, you’ll still gain valuable knowledge, so I don't see it as a waste of time. Ultimately, the decision is yours.

CPD (Continuing Professional Development)
CPD refers to the ongoing learning and training activities that members undertake to enhance their skills, knowledge, and competence in their profession. Here are some key points about CPD in OACETT:
Purpose: CPD helps members stay current with technological advancements, industry standards, and best practices in their field.
Requirements: Members are typically required to complete a certain number of CPD hours or credits within a specific period (e.g., every two years).
Activities: CPD activities can include attending workshops, seminars, and conferences, completing online courses, participating in webinars, and engaging in self-directed learning.
Documentation: Members are encouraged to keep records of their CPD activities to demonstrate compliance when renewing their membership or certifications.
Professional Growth: Engaging in CPD can lead to career advancement, improved job performance, and greater professional recognition.
Overall, CPD is essential for maintaining the integrity and competence of OACETT members in the rapidly evolving engineering and technology fields.
#8 Conclusion: My Reflections and Final Tips
One of the most valuable lessons I learned during my OACETT certification journey was the importance of staying organized and proactive. Keeping track of deadlines, requirements, and communication with OACETT made the process much smoother. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you're uncertain about any part of the process—it’s better to clarify things early on rather than face delays later.
Additionally, I found that having a clear plan and timeline for each step helped me stay on track. From proposal submission to exam preparation, set realistic deadlines for yourself and stick to them. OACETT's timeline for the approval of the proposal can take a few weeks to a few months, so be patient, but don’t be afraid to check in politely if things seem to be taking longer than expected.
Final tip: use this time to connect with others in your field. The OACETT community is full of experienced professionals who can offer advice, support, and insight into the certification process and beyond.
